After a successful launching of three book clubs in the three regions of the country, Utawaleza book club has introduced a mobile application that will benefit many book wormers countrywide.

According to the club’s founder, Singaliwe Chilemba, the application has been designed in such a way that people who may not be interested in joining the club can also take part in book selection.

“We wanted to offer members of the Utawaleza book club something extra and also give people who may be interested in the book club but are not able to join for various reasons a chance to taste what is happening and also take part whenever they want to,” revealed Chilemba.

Utawaleza Application is a one stop centre for bookworms since it is has various features that will make them stay glued to the app.

“Features include notifications for book club events, access to locations of the club’s events supported by a map, sharing recommendations from our list of books as well as the ability to download some of the works that we have been authorized to feature,” she highlighted.

That is not all, the application enables visitors to set reminders of their choice that prompts one to read the books available.

Chilemba hopes the recently introduced application will help enhance the reading culture which is slowly dying in the country.

“It is my hope that it will help strengthen discipline when it comes to reading and perhaps encourage people to join one of the book clubs either Lilongwe, Blantyre, Zomba or Mzuzu if they haven’t,” Chilemba said.

In a separate interview, the head of the History Department at Mzuzu University, Chrispin Mphande hailed Utawaleza book club for the initiative because it will revamp the culture of reading among Malawians

“It is a welcome development and the only thing remaining is sensitization of the masses. As a starting point, the club should set aside books which should easily attract people to read,” explained Mphande.

Utawaleza application is only available on Play Store for Android users but will soon be available to iPhone users.
