It’s now official. Malawi’s celebrated Hip Hop icon, Fredokiss, is to rub shoulders with one of Africa’s revered musical groups, Sauti Sol, during this year’s Lake of Stars event scheduled for September 28 to September 30.
Being the 15th edition of the internationally acclaim gala, this year’s event will also be staged at a new venue, Leopards Bay, deep at Kabumba Hotel resort, at the foot of Senga Hills in Salima.
Confirming the development, Lake of Stars’ Director, Will Jameson said he is delighted to be bring this world-class act to perform at this year’s festival.
“Like many people I’m a huge fan of Sauti Sol and I can’t think of a better place to enjoy their music than by the stunning shores of Lake Malawi surrounded by friends. I first had a taste of how good they were live back in 2013 when we brought them over for our City of Stars event but since then the band’s career and fan base has gone through the roof so I feel very privileged that they have agreed to come and help us celebrate 15 years of the Lake of Stars project.” Said Jameson.
Hailing from Kenya, Sauti Sol’s exploits need no introduction at all. The multiple award winning afro-pop band has been commanding a fan base over time. Among others, it has ever been crowned as the Best African Group at AFRIMA Awards, MTV Africa Music Awards, Sound city MTV Awards ,and the UK’s BEFFTA Awards.
That aside, the group’s track, ‘Live and Die in Afrika’ from their Third album was included in BBC Africa’s Top 10 tracks of 2015.
Sauti Sol Released their debut studio album Mwanzo on 1st November 2008 before coming up with another cracker, Sol Filofia, three years later.
This will be the maiden appearance of Fredokiss at the event.
Minus Fredokiss, and Sauti Sol’s performances, prospective patrons will also be entertained by Kim of Diamonds, Forus dance crew, Madalitso Band, and George Kalukusha among the many other artists in almost all spheres of entertainment ranging from music, poetry, theatre and dance from Malawi and internationally
As usual, various firms do join hands in making Lake of Stars glamourous; this year is no exception as one of the leading mobile phone service providers, TNM has also pledged its total support for the gala.
According to the press release (by event organizers), Head of Marketing at TNM, Sobhuza Ngwenya, said the event is in line with his company’s goals of uplifting the cultural face of Malawi.
“Music is central to the Malawian culture hence TNM, as a truly Malawian network, is excited to be part of this international cultural event. This is arguably the biggest summer beach festival which attracts huge local and international patronage and as a fun brand, TNM could not resist the temptation to join the party,” said Ngwenya,
The Lake of Stars has been trending for 15 years now. It is arguably the biggest summer festival on the land. Its exploits in promoting Malawian culture to the outside world has even attracted the praise of the Malawi government.
