Barely less than a month after a female youthful, Mervis Maigwa had bailed out underprivileged pupils, another noble female citizen, Towera Ngwira has followed suit.

22-year-old Towera, a fourth year Environmental Science student at the Malawi Polytechnic has awarded 21 star performers at Mlambalala primary school in Blantyre.

Through her organization, Extra mile Development Foundation (EMDEF), Towera has dished out assorted curricular items ranging from dictionaries, mathematical sets, pencils and snacks to top three performers from Standard One up to Standard eight.

According to Towera, the drive aimed at boosting self-confidence and also motivate them in their pursuit of academic prowess.

“As a student, I know that a pupil needs some incentives like the ones I have just donated so as to increase their passing rates,” she said.

According to her, the drive is the genesis of the journey that will take her to various primary schools countrywide.

“As a person, I believe in sharing the little I have and my aim is to tour various schools not only Blantyre but various districts so that our learners should be motivated and develop hard working spirit,” promises she.

On her part, the school’s Head teacher, Gilberta Mpasu applauded her for the program saying that activities such as those, spark a spirit of competition among learners which pushes them towards a common goal.

“Such incentives energize pupils and promote a spirit of competition – a healthy input to a successful academic journey, he said.

One of the beneficiaries, Desire Mataka, a standard 6 student who took position 1 and got a junior dictionary thanked Towera for the program saying it would boost his academic capacity more especially English skills.

“I’m so glad that I was amongst the beneficiaries. I’m hopeful the item (junior dictionary) is going to improve my English,” he thanked.

EMDEF, which started in 2015 exists to improve lives of vulnerable young people in the communities through promotion of their nutrition, economic, health and educational status.
