It doesn’t get sweeter than this! After years of wailing and gnawing their teeth courtesy of a lack of sound sponsorship to showcase their God-given sporting talents, youths around Blantyre city South East constituency have all the reasons to smile as councilor for Misesa Ward, United Transformation Movement’s executive member, Louis Ngalande, has pumped in a whopping 45 million Kwacha for netball and football tournaments.
It is ‘Probably the biggest sports feast that ever came to town’ and walking the talk of his party’s drive for youth empowerment, outspoken Ngalande says the tournaments are aimed at realizing the dreams of otherwise marginalized talents in his area. In an interview, Ngalande, himself a youth, says time was now ripe for the youths in his area to expose their talents.
According to him, the amount means nothing to him if it will not meet the intended purpose.
“My objective is to promote soccer in my area because I come from a football ground and I want my fellow youths to go through the root I went through. That is why I have pumped in such a big amount of money,” said Ngalande.
Ngalande is no stranger to the country’s soccer history books as he has ever donned the then Bata Bullets, Railways, and Moneymen Football Club’s jerseys during his hey days. Minus that, he had ever represented the country senior national soccer team, the Flames, under the tutelage of the late Mathious Mwenda. Such a rich background, according to him, made him appreciate more the plight of his fellow youths in his constituency.
“I’ve ever been there, I know all the requirements of a successful professional sports career. Talent aside, heavy financial muscle is also paramount. This is why I’ve sacrificed myself to pump in such a hefty amount,” he clarified.
The historical Hon Louis Ngalande Trophy will see 56 male soccer teams, and 36 female netball teams outsmarting each other enroute to the ‘promised land’. It will be played on a knock-out basis.
Among other scintillating features is that all the participating teams will be presenting with brand new sets of jerseys to be used during the competition.
The tournament will be played on a knockout basis and the tournament has attracted 56 male teams who will be competing for the huge money in the offing.
The victor in the men’s category will smile all the way to the bank with MK1.5 million and a new kit whilst their netballing counterparts will smiles back home with an unnamed amount and prizes.
