• LoS goes back to Nkhata-Bay
By Chifundo Zingunde
Having hypnotized patrons with its usual fun-tainment artistic displays for the past 15 years, the magnificent mother of all summer festivals locally, the Lake of Stars, is back again this summer.
Dubbed the Lake of Stars Discovery, the 16th edition of the elegant gala will see patrons being mesmerized at the magnificent Kachere Kastle at Chintheche in Nkhata-Bay from the 27th to the 29th of September 2019.
The recent edition saw patrons enjoying and appreciating various global cultural displays at Kabumba Hotel in Salima, where patrons had a taste of the Kenyan award winning afro-music crew, Sauti Sol dished its best to spice up the ecstasy.
So, the 16th edition of the LoS Discovery will see the northern region having a taste of this most-sort after gala. The charming villages of Sanga, Chintheche, and Kande (all in Nkhata-Bay) just to mention a few have all the reasons to smile as they are expected to dance Malipenga, famous honara, chilimika et al and at the same time playing the ambassadorial role of teaching the world the tonga culture.
Confirming the news in a Press Statement, Lake of Stars’ Head of Media, Zilanie Gondwe is quoted revealing that the new edition will unpack a cheerful entertainment and will exceed the excitement that will create memories to the festival’s participants.
“We’re excited about the direction we’re taking Lake of Stars this year. Our new Discovery edition will offer a unique adventure for festival goers in an unparalleled, intimate setting. Lake of Stars has always been about more than the big names. It’s about creating memories and shared experiences”. Says Zilanie.
According to Zilanie, Lake of stars Discovery as the name suggests, will also give a chance to budding young talents to prove their prowess in their various spheres of arts. Young and hidden talents to prove their worth in the face of different nationalities.
“Our vision is also about uncovering and promoting new artists alongside the already established ones. And in 2019, we’re amplifying this by shining a light on amazing rising stars in new music and art in Malawi, southern Africa and beyond. I invite everyone to join us on this journey of discovery to hear the sounds and experience the creativity of the Warm Heart of Africa” says she.
More than just tourism
True, that for over fifteen years the Lake of Stars project has been on a mission: to promote Malawian music, culture and tourism.
On the ground however, LoS has been more than its motto as the galas have massively poured in millions of Kwachas into the country’s coffers, thereby assisting the government in the uplifting of the country’s economic face.
“Lake of Stars Festival alone generates an estimated $1.6 million into Malawi’s economy each year by attracting visitors to discover and explore the warm heart of Africa.” Reads part of the statement.
The announcement of the 16th edition of the exotic extravaganza has already earned praises from various personalities in the country’s arts and entertainment industry.
Lady Pace, one of the country’s finest female rappers says she is more than excited with the announcement and says she looks forward for it.
“I’m very excited; more than happy, northern region, Nkhatabay so to say is my home! It will be a career changing opportunity if I will be included,” Said Lady Pace.
Another music artist, Beanca, a hardcore conscious reggae artist, says LoS is always a game changer in the country’s arts and entertainment circles.
“Nothing beats the goodies that LoS always brings. The euphoria, the drama…you name it! This festival is simply a must attend for everybody,” she praised.
Agreeing with the two entertainers, Mzuzu-based painter and drawing genius, Kondwani Nali, brains behind KNali Arts says he looks forward to having his arts displayed in such a global event.
“It’s the dream of every artist to display their wares at such a grand podium. I look forward to this event. I’m geared to taking part in this year’s event,” says he.
Artists like KNali will have to apply via an opening that is to be available in May.
Previously, Los stars has been headlined by some of the planet’s finest artists in the names like Major Lazer, Sauti Sol, Mafikizolo, Freshly Ground, Young Fathers, Uhuru, Toya Delazy, Foals, Beverley Knight, Maccabees and Oliver Mtukudzi and other local giants.
