Local teams from different sporting disciplines in the northern capital, Mzuzu will have to pay for them to use Katoto sports complex, EM can reveal.
The development come after officials from Katoto secondary school cried foul over the ownership, and maintenance of the facility.
According to Katoto officials, every team is supposed to pay an annual subscription of 10 thousand Kwacha in order to be accessing Katoto football ground, netball court, volleyball court and also a basketball court.
One of the facility’s officials, Sammy Nyirenda said the development has started to ensure there is proper usage of the complex and also maintenance of the facility.
“Most of the times, teams here in Mzuzu use Katoto ground and courts without following proper procedures. As a result, disagreements always follow whenever something like vandalism, goes wrong. For this fact, it’s becoming very difficult for Katoto to identify the team responsible for the mess,” he attributed.
Nyirenda further said if a team pays the money to the school, it would be easy to track the proceedings. That aside, other necessary supporting materials like chairs would also be provided.
Agreeing with Nyirenda, one of the frequent users of the facilities, Young Jere welcomed the development saying it will help teams to get organized hence improving the games in the north.
“Nobody can just pay 10 thousand Kwacha without using it. If the team has paid K10 thousand, it will always make sure that they are showing up for training thereby improving the games. Most of the people are fond of training as individuals but because they will be paying money as teams, it will help them start training as a team,” said Jere.
Tapiwa Nundwe, another user of the facility appreciated the idea saying the price was fair as most netball teams in the city lack sponsorship.
“K10 thousand is not that much. Teams can manage the fair,” she said.
Minus the annual subscriptions, if teams want to use the facility for just a day, they will have to cough K2500.
Katoto secondary school sports complex has assisted in uplifting various sports disciplines in Mzuzu and surrounding areas.
