It is now evident that African chitenje fusion attire is the talk of the town across all corners of the warm heart of Africa. Literally a minute hardly passes before your eyes bump into some uptown Malawian donning the said attire.
Local fashion designers are also taking advantage of this African-attire camaraderie to make ends meet by dishing out fancy designs.
One of such modern fashion designs is KB wear, a clothing line by one Lilongwe-based youthful fashion designer, Owen Kabon Mwenye under his label, MAWEN designs.
Born in just about a year ago, KB wear is already becoming the most sought after clothing line locally. According to Owen, the unique appeal of the clothing line is making it easy to smoothly invade the local market.
“Our brand is trying to promote culture, so we came up with something that should be more modern but with an African flavour in it,” he reveals.
Owen has always had this appetite for unique and scintillating sights. To him, he is always excited whenever he sees new designs. The sight of people donning fascinating clothing designs energized him to try his luck in this game. The rest, as they say, is indeed history.
“I was being inspired by people who were cladding in modern designs. I then pushed myself to try if I could also bring in something unique but trendy,” he says.
Versatility in the designs
KB Wear is more than just your average African chilundu clothing line. From T-shirts for both sexes to hood tops, skirts, trousers, all the way to the jackets, KB wear has literary anything for every generation, and sex. No wonder it is going global already.
“We are reaching each and every country, so far we have been receiving orders worldwide and we promise to come up with more work to reach the needs of our customers,” Mwenye promises.
Advice to fellow youths
In a country where over half of the youths cry foul over shortage of employment, Owen Mwenye should be, and is a model to many. To him, youths should learn to invest the little they earn.
“Let’s invest with the little we earn; it’s not a matter of having a big amount of money for a start. And another thing is that lets not take our talents for granted rather let the talents benefit our lives” advises he.
