The 18 teams that the Northern Region Football Association assigned work this past weekend did not disappoint; goals rained like perennial rainfalls along the equator. 28 shots found their way unto the back of the net with Luwinga United now becoming the highest scoring team so far with 9 goals under their belt.
On the other end, Kabwafu United is yet to find the back of the net.
The past weekend also saw only Chitipa United and Ekwendeni United resting.
So, let’s take a peep into last weekend’s (Week 2) SIMSO action.
In Mzimba, Mbawa FC was dating fellow debutants Nkhata-Bay United at Mbawa ground. Both teams were coming from defeats in the first week and this increased the hype of the encounter with both teams looking forward to their first win of the campaign. After the final whistle, it was the visitors who came out victorious by edging their hosts by 2 goals to 1.
In Karonga, Week 1 summit of the table side Chilumba Barracks played host to Ekwendeni Hammers at Majaliro ground in a match poised to be competitive considering the caliber of both teams. As expected, the teams shared the spoils; 1 – all it ended.
In Rumphi, giants Rumphi United welcomed the team of the moment, Fish Eagles at Police ground. There is nothing much to write about this encounter as both teams failed to hit each other’s net. The result means ‘defeat’ is yet to appear in the books of Rumphi United’s dictionary this season.
In Mzuzu, Luwinga United hosted Thunduwike Fc. The latter had started on a high having forced a draw in their maiden match in the league. Come Saturday however, Luwinga United had other plans when they thumped their opponents by 7 goals to 1 to overcome Bolero United as the league’s top scorers.
In Chitipa, Lufita United was hosting Kabwafu United at Lupita ground. The home side managed to put its house in order after going down in the first match of the season by beating the Mzimba based side with 2 goals to nil.
In Rumphi, it was a rookie’s battle where Katowo Young Soccer hosted Mchengautuba United at Katowo ground. By the end of 90 minutes, both teams shared the cake; 1-1.
In Karonga, debutants Chilumba United welcomed Ekwendeni Hammers at Uliwa ground where the visitors gave the home side a good run for their money when they beat them by a goal to nil to take home 4 points from the trip up north.
In Mzimba, rejuvenated Manyamula Fc seems to have put their last season’s wrangles behind them when they registered their second win of the season at the expense of new kids on the block Nkhatabay United. The result means Nkhata-Bay United has managed to collect only 3 points on the road.
In Karonga, Baka city continued their impressive start to the season when they humbled Kabwafu United by 3 goals to nil at Maghemo ground. The result makes Kabwafu United the only side in our esteemed league yet to hit the back of the net.
In Mzuzu, Zolozolo United was hosting disappointed Thunduwike at the botanic ground where the hosts piled another missile on their visitors when they humbled them by a goal to nil. The result leaves the rookies with some food for thought when they prepare for their next assignments.
In Rumphi, Lura started their campaign against high flying Fish Eagles at Wenera ground where the hosts wanted to kick start the season on a high note. Mother luck, however, appeared to have forsaken the home team as the Eagles came out triumphant via a 1-2 margin; automatically moving to the summit of the table.
The vibe for the championship is slowly heating up with teams leaving no stone unturned in the quest for accumulating maximum points.
