The adage “Out of adversity comes the opportunity” appears to have rung a bell in the life of one budding graphic designer, Stephen Phiri who, through his art, is now a breadwinner in his family despite being just 20 years old.
Stephen thought of joining the designing industry so as to earn a living to support himself, his family and others with employment.
With no formal training, Stephen managed to acquaint himself with graphic designing skills courtesy of Youtube and trial and errors.
“Through YouTube tutorials, l learnt (graphic) designing in 2018. Now, I’m a big mind creator working with many entities such as National youth network on climate change, Heritage Foods, and Farnex Investment, among others,” he revealed.
Mentored by Joseph Kachingwe, Stephen grew fast in his trade after being part of Bunda publications team where he was perfecting his skills night in night out.
It was in 2019 that Steve managed to launch his own brand, 365 Designs and Photography.
“l had never sat in any designing class. Working with the publication team, l gained experience and started creating music artworks, brochures, and logos. Out of the earnings from company, I’ve managed to open a farm in my home village (Nkhotakota),” he added.
According to Phiri, Malawian youths should learn to unearth their talents and make fortunes out of them.
“Most of Malawian youths only believe in formal employment and yet there are most of us who can eke a living out of our talents, if we can turn them into a businesses,” Phiri advised.
Stephen is a pride in his family. According to his father, the risk-taking instincts of his son has reaped the sweet fruits his family in now enjoying.
“When he first told me about his ideas, I felt it was going to be too much for him to concentrate as he was also supposed to be attending classes at his tertiary education institution. Time was to prove me wrong,” says the proud father.
Being a co-founder of 365 Designs and Photography, Stephen is planning of strengthening his team so it becomes a national force to reckon with.
Apart from designing and owning a farm yard, Stephen is a third-year student at LUANAR Bunda campus doing a Bachelor of Science degree in Agribusiness Management.
