25-year-old graphic designer and registered nurse midwife with Nurses Council of Malawi, Atusaye Kamanga, is set to defy the odds by daring to run a 49.2 Kilometre distance from Mzuzu to Nkhata-Bay to raise funds for cash strapped Mzuzu Nursery Crisis.
Atusaye said the idea came having noted how financially dilapidated the said centre was.
“The Nursery Crisis needs adequate funds to support abandoned neonates. Having the love and passion for the babies, it is petty and heart breaking seeing babies suffering in their early days of life; orphaned and vulnerable children need a helping hand that can bring hope for their future” he said.
The youngster, was a couple of months ago also in the limelight for having introduced what was termed Fitness Run – a campaign aimed at promoting a healthy living via jogging every Saturday morning by Mzuzu city residents.
Having realized the sorry sight that was Mzuzu Nursery Crisis, Atusaye said he realized he could use his passion for fitness (jogging) to aid the ailing institution by luring other good willed members of the society to join his course.
“I’m financially not that strong. However, I realized I could use my passion to ensure the babies under Mzuzu Nursery Crisis are helped in one way or the other,” he revealed.
It is with such a background that Atusaye believe his sacrifice to run the said distance on the 12 of October 2019, will assist noble Malawian and non-Malawian citizens appreciate the gravity of the challenges Mzuzu Nursery Crisis is undergoing in its day to day affairs.
According to him, he hopes to raise a minimum of K500, 000 (five hundred thousand Kwacha) plus non-cash items.
“I’m knocking unto various doors and extending my hand to whoever cares so that together we can bring light to these helpless future of our country,” he pleads.
Unlike other noble citizens like him, Atusaye promises to deliver the relief materials the same form they will be donated.
“Everybody who donates their items should be assured that the latter shall be donated the way they donor wanted to. If it’s cash, it’s going to be donated as cash. We (the organizers) won’t change cash into purchasing clothes or foods for the babies for example,” he elucidates.
Mzuzu Nursery Crisis is a non-profit making organization under Ministry of Hope working on the care of orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC). It is in Chimaliro and mainly focuses on nurturing abandoned neonates and the ones who lost their mothers at the time of delivery.
