18-year-old Djamillah Kondwani emerged the winner in the first ever Miss Mzuzu Inter-College Beauty pageant that was staged at Mzuzu Tourist Lodge last Saturday.

Djamillah, a Certificate student at the Malawi Institute of Journalism (MIJ) saw off the other 12 contestants in a tightly contested maiden affair.

The gala, which involved students from Malawi College of Accountancy, Malawi Institute of Tourism, and MIJ was the climax of the first ever joint Social Weekend by the three Mzuzu-based campuses.

Having gone through the various categories like Office wear, Casual, Tradition et al; Djamillah convinced the four panel enroute to the crown.

By the end of it all, Djamillah said she was excited to have been the maiden occupant of her office.

“I’m glad that I’ve been crowned the first ever Miss Mzuzu Intercom. I know, a lot of people have misconceptions about female models so my tenure will involve various outreach programmes aimed at correcting such a mindset,” she promises.

The beauty pageant was the climax of the grand social weekend, by the three institutions. Among others, drinking competitions, volleyball, and sack racing, and other performances were part of the sizzling fiesta.

According to the Acting Organizing Chair of the event, Priscilla Khaiya, the event surpassed her expectation and people should brave for more improved subsequent events.

“We’d some doubts it was going to be this successful! The fans, the participants, and everything was just splendid! This is going to be an everyday day event in the coming semesters,” she said.

Meanwhile, the newly crown beauty Queen says she would like to involve herself in charitable activities so as to spread more positive images of the three academic institutions.

“Part of my everyday activities as Miss Intercom will be to be the face of the three institutions. I’d like people to have positive images about our institutions as you’re aware, people out there associate college life with delinquency. There’s something positive that does come from these three colleges,” she enlightened.

MCA’s Idah Nyondo scooped the first princess whilst the second princess accolade went to a Nacy from Mij.
